“Ian was so drunk he snogged my nose and I was so drunk I thought he had stolen my purse – but obviously it worked out,” laughs Alex of her romantic meeting with Ian.
The Gateshead couple, both aged 33, married at their rustic vintage wedding on August 12, 2018 with 91 guests in the day and 150 in the evening. It was three years after they had originally planned to wed, but Alex was so ill with red skin syndrome the delay was necessary (recovery takes three years or much longer for an adult). “It was the most traumatic experience we have had to go through… my fiancé became my carer,” explains Alex. “I started to recover but had to battle with depression and anxiety a result.”
The couple married at Healey barn, creating many DIY items to decorate the space. “Most items were DIY including a horse-shoe table plan, accessories from vintage dress clips, wooden signs, fimo wedding toppers and hula hoops to display photos,” recalls the bride.
“The long journey through difficult times to get down the aisle made it so much more overwhelmingly wonderful,” smiles Alex. “This was the wedding we were always meant to have, all the geeky details reflected us as a couple.”

Alex wore a Jenny Packham gown for the ceremony, and a shorter multiway dress from Ava Rose Hamilton Bridal Couture for the reception.
“I liked the idea of having different shades and different styles so it didn’t look like a wall of one colour,” explains Alex.
“We chose epic songs from films and TV that we loved for background music,” says Alex.
