The Gherkin, a 180 metre high skyscraper in the city’s primary financial district, has become a recognisable London landmark and one of the capital’s most widely recognised examples of contemporary architecture. Originally known as the Swiss Re. Building, Londoners subsequently renamed it the ‘Gherkin’ for its distinctive shape, and it was purchased by its current owners for a cool ?700 million in 2014.
The construction of this gleaming high-tech building has acted as a catalyst for the growing cluster of high rises in the City of London. The cigar-shaped structure has a steel frame with circular floor plans and a glass facade with diamond-shaped panels. The colossal architectural braces create a dramatic entrance for you and your guests, setting the precedent for your memorable wedding day.
The Gherkin has been a popular destination for hosting countless events. The modern glass and steel design emit a serene ambience that is well suited for any occasion. As the sun sets, London lights up around you and your guests, creating an unsurpassed backdrop to your photographs and accompaniment for getting your wedding celebrations into full swing. Start your lifelong journey together among spectacular views of London at this icon of modern architecture.
Encapsulated in floor to ceiling glass, surrounded by London’s night sky, The Gherkin creates an unforgettable and romantic atmosphere. The events team have also put together an all inclusive competitive winter package that starts from just 14,850 GBP including VAT. Outside of the winter months, minimum spends start at 16,200 GBP for evening hire. Alternatively, you can opt for a full day (2pm to midnight) hire with spends starting from 21,000 GBP.
For a more intimate wedding, the private dining rooms on the 38th floor, complemented by the stunning views of London, are ideal for smaller dining experiences and celebrations. For any party that is 50 guests or lower, you can opt for one of these, which have the bonus of a low minimum spend starting from 1,200 GBP. The rooms share the same incredible backdrop views as Helix and Iris and are named after clouds: Alto, Cirrus, Stratus, Cumulus and Nimbus, emphasising it being a sky high venue.
The Gherkin is London’s most instantly recognisable tower. With 360-degree views of London and a glass dome roof, this unique event space is sure to impress from every angle. For anyone looking to host their special day in an eco friendly venue, this is also the one for you. The swirling stripe pattern visible on the exterior is the result of the building’s energy saving system, which allows the air to flow up through spiralling wells. Its bold and energy efficient design has won the Gherkin many awards.
We had a spectacular wedding at The Gherkin. The civil ceremony took place on the top floor, with the most amazing views over London. We were so fortunate to have lovely light for the day, a little bit of cloud cover to diffuse the strong sunlight.
We chose the Gherkin in the City of London for our wedding to celebrate in the city that we love living and working in. The top floor of the Gherkin is a stunning location and we were lucky enough to have a spectacular sunset for the background to our first dance. The London skyline at night is such an impressive sight but seeing it from that height puts a whole new perspective on it.
Had a dinner reception here. There were both beautiful decorations and a beautiful view. Everything was laid out and presented well. The food was very good, the drinks great and dessert, delicious! Staff were all very polite, from the staff at security, to the waiters bringing out food.
We would like to leave a review of our fantastic experience at The Gherkin but in particular for Erin, we wanted to say a huge and heartfelt thank you for all your work in recent months. Saturday was just a beautiful, life affirming, glorious day and we loved every second. Everything ran smoothly. Thank you for being so wonderful about everything and please do keep in touch.
Our wedding is one that our guests still talk about as being incredible and it was largely because of the venue. The views at The Gherkin are breathtaking - having our ceremony in the sky above london. The beautiful sunset and then at night, the lights of central London that surround you through the 360° created a both a glamourous and magical atmosphere. All of this in an iconic internationally renowned building which we couldn't recommend enough. The practical side is perfect too. The staff were absolutely brilliant and took care of all the organising so we didn't have to stress making any decisions throughtout the day. We are passionate about food and it was amazing! The menu was fantastic and the choices we made were delicious and like nothing our guests has tasted anywhere else. If you're reading this and wondering whether or not this venue is for you, so was I. Making a venue decision is one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding day but trust me - go see it, you will fall in love with it like we did!
Our wedding ceremony was held at the top of the Gherkin at 3:30pm. The sun was slowly setting as we were married in front of 96 of our friends and family. Everything went perfectly to plan, although I struggled to get the ring on his finger when the time came! We also had our wedding reception here with a three-course meal and then headed to the dance floor. We had a meat and cheese station as well as a chocolate fountain in the evening, a photo booth and DJ that read the room phenomenally, the dance floor was full the entire evening. I tried hard to make our day stand out from the rest and was conscious that the venue may be a bit corporate for a wedding but with the personal touches that we added in the music, the table names, the programmes – which I designed myself – all made it special.
