Britain’s Parliament has passed a bill legalising same-sex marriages in England and Wales.
The House of Commons today approved minor tweaks to the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, which was passed by the House of Lords just one day earlier.
All that is required for the bill to become operable law is for it to receive the Queen’s assent, which is expected to happen by the weekend.
The new bill allows gay couples to marry in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales. Couples who previously entered into civil partnerships will be able to have their status recognised as a legal marriage.
The first legal same-sex marriages are expected to take place in the upcoming English summer.
