North Yorkshire pair Eilis Tobin and Calum Plenderleith aren’t ones for cliches, but when it comes to love, they know they’re better together.
“I don’t feel like the typical ‘we’ve been through bad and good’ suits us, as since we have been together life has just been that bit more enjoyable, and that bit more easy going!” the bride, 25, says.
The couple says their modern classic wedding was the moment they married their “best friend, tequila buddy and soulmate”.
They wed at St Leonard’s Catholic Church Malton, North Yorkshire, in front of 250 family and friends on September 24, 2016.
Celebrations continued at nearby The Orangery. “We loved the ‘proper British’ feel to the venue and how laid back they seemed about all of our different and quirky ideas,” Ellis says.
She and Calum, 26, planned most of the day themselves, with help from family and friends.
“We did a lot of the personal touches ourselves – for example we had the tables named after different gins, and used the actual bottle as a vase on the table. To compliment this, we had small tonic bottles with flowers in dotted around the tables,” Eilis says.
“We had a lot of pictures of us around the venue for the day, some of which we hung out on a washing line made from twine. Each picture had a caption of the date, time and when in our relationship it was taken. We also hung up photos of other family weddings… It was nice to make the wedding about the guests as much as it was about us.”

The bride says she wore every girl’s dream shoe when she chose these full glitter Jimmy Choo heels.
Eilis’ wedding band included sapphires to pay tribute to their September wedding.
Classic York Pullman buses got guests from A to B in fine style.
Both pharmacists, Eilis and Calum met on a jungle-themed night out during university. “It took Eilis a while to realise that not pursuing me would be a life-changing mistake,” Calum jokes. Three years later, Calum popped the question under the northern lights at Tromso, Norway.
“We were really into the foliage look, we wanted a real elegant feel but without too much structure. The bridal bouquet was all whites and foliage as I didn’t want to take attention from the dress,” Eilis says.
The bride says her modern gown helped shape the whole theme of the big day. “I was originally going for a very ‘tea party, meadowy’ feel but then that dress took us a bit more Hollywood!”
Calum’s aunt put together a delicious Guinness and ginger stout creation for the couple’s wedding cake.
