“There are no rules for a good wedding, so just go with what is important to you,” were words bride Joanna Froud and David Poole lived by for their DIY wedding.

The Bristol couple, both aged 30, met at their local pub in 2010. “He made me laugh uncontrollably from the outset and has done ever since,” says Jo of Dave. “He is the ultimate joker, but is also incredibly wise; beyond his years.” In contrast, Dave enjoys Jo’s endearing quirks!

They married on August 9, 2014 in the presence of 80 guests in the day and 120 in the evening. The couple chose their venues; Holy Trinity Church, Doynton for the ceremony and Doynton Village Hall for the reception, with their guests in mind. “From the outset we decided we wanted to be close to home, so the majority of people wouldn’t have to pay for travel and accommodation,” explains Jo.

Wanting to funnel most of their budget into food and photography – the couple got working to create as much as they could. “The majority of our wedding was either homemade or significant to us,” says Jo. “We organised all drinks and the bar ourselves – I made up bottles of Elderflower Gin Collins to be served alongside Bounders cider as our welcome drinks, followed by lots of table wine and Prosecco for the toast.”

But above all, they did everything their own way. “We didn’t buy into the traditions we didn’t like and we didn’t listen to those people who said ‘you must do this,” smiles Jo.

Joanna opted for soft pink and cream bouquets, an elegant touch for her bridesmaids who were also dressed in neutral tones.

Petite Jo wore an Annasul Y design which she paired with orange heels! “I wasn’t too bothered by the shoes as long as they were high – Dave is 6 ft 4,” she says.

The bride’s dad and his band Roadhouse provided entertainment for the evening as well as a DJ friend who “bowed to my request for lots of 90s R&B/hip hop,” laughs Jo.
