How We Met:
We were introduced through mutual friends, but recognised each other from uni. So we started hanging out at uni and catching up as friends. After about a month, Benny told me that he liked me and wanted to take me on a date. Our first date was at a Tepanyaki restaurant on the Gold Coast - it was such a good night I thought to myself, "I always want to be with this guy" and the rest is history.
At that time we were doing ´date nights´ every Friday night. It was Benny´s turn and he told me we were going to dinner in West End. On the way to dinner I started telling Benny that I wasn´t happy cos our relationship had become very domesticated and dull. Benny was acting really weird because I brought this up, so I reassured him that I didn´t want to break up, I just wanted to spice it up a bit. He pulled over at the top of Highgate Hill which was on the way. I asked what we were doing and he said, "Well we need to talk about this don´t we!". I thought - this was a pretty romantic place to have a chat (overlooking Brisbane city at night). As soon as we sat down, Benny says "I think I´ve got something that will spice things up!" And he got down on one knee and proposed. I was so shocked I couldn´t say anything but, "Are you serious??". Once I had said yes (finally), Benny took me to a bar in Brisbane where all our friends were waiting. He had organised it so we could celebrate with our friends. It was so sweet.
My cupboard is full of blacks and greys so I knew I wanted a dress that had a bit of black in it. I bought the Katie dress from Wendy Makin Designs in East Brisbane. Wendy fitted me herself and was so lovely the whole time. The Katie dress is very unique - it has a black bow around the middle and little twists of black and white fabric all over the bottom. I loved the silk bodice with sweetheart neckline.
I wore a hair piece instead of a veil, that was the same fabric as my dress. As well as Swarovski crystal drop earrings and bracelet. I wore black flats (I´m 6 foot tall so no heels for me!) that had a crystal feature on the front.
Benny wore a fitted black suit from Ferrari Formal that he bought, white shirt and skinny tie.
The bridesmaids dresses I bought online and had them altered in Australia. They were a black chiffon maxi with sweetheart neckline to match my dress. I bought the girls a chunky clear and black crystal necklace that looked like leaves wrapped around their neck - with matching bracelet.
The look we were going for was a country kitchen type feel with black, white and canary yellows. The reception was cocktail style with different types of tables and lounges, so we were very random with our decorations. I bought lots of different glass bottles from second hand stores, watering cans, checkered paper runners, paper pom poms to hang from the roof and LOTS of flowers - sunflowers, lavender, daisies, chrysies, etc. Also put a lot of different frames around with pics of Benny and I, as well as some plants (standards) for a bit of greenery. Overall I was really happy with how it turned out.
I made the bouquets myself. I went to the Brisbane Flower Market on Thursday and bought all the flowers for my wedding for $200 (including flowers for the reception). The theme was country chic so the idea was to keep the flowers quite casual looking. They turned out great! My bridesmaids helped me put the bouquets together and we were finished in about an hour.
Ceremony Reception Decor
Ceremony: White americana chairs with white and yellow rose petals down the aisle. We stood between two Standards (plants that have the leaves cut into a sphere) with big ribbon bows. Very simple. We had yellow and white topped cupcakes from The Cupcake Parlour in Brisbane. They were tiered and spread out over the table.
We had a DJ for music throughout the evening - specifically playing our favourite songs.
We went to New Zealand for a week. Resort out in the country near Mt Hutt. It was absolutely breath-taking. We didn´t leave our resort - it was just too beautiful and relaxing.
I LOVED our ceremony. There were a few hiccups but it just made it ´us´ and all the more special. Our mums each read a poem which was really nice. Fireworks - It was the same night as Riverfire so we got free fireworks! We had yellow and white topped cupcakes from The Cupcake Parlour in Brisbane. They were tiered and spread out over the table.
Everyone tells you that your wedding day goes so fast - so make sure you make a point to stop, step back from the wedding and look around. Makes you more appreciative of everyone around you too! Oh - and not everything will go to plan. Just go with the flow and don´t have expectations that are too high.
