Bagpipes and stovies: Laura and Oliver’s traditional Scottish wedding

Wedding: 25/03/2017

Keen to incorporate Scottish traditions in their wedding day, Laura Innes and Oliver Bretherton were in luck when they found two ideal venues within walking distance of one another.

“When we went to the Caledonian Club (which is a Scottish members club in Belgravia) and realised that there is a Church of Scotland a few minutes’ walk away, we were sold,” explains Laura. The couple, aged 31 and 36, married at their traditional Scottish wedding on March 25, 2017. The original 50-person guests list soon blew out to 120, a decision Laura says they were really pleased with in the end. “We have quite big families on both sides and really wanted all our friends and family to be able to celebrate with us.”

Despite their families not being based in London, they were all able to pitch in when it came to planning. “My mum sewed a belt onto each bridesmaid’s dress and Oli’s sister made our wedding cake. “While neither of us are creative enough to add many DIY elements to our wedding, these were the sorts of things that added a personal touch.”

The bride opted for an elegant lace gown with three-quarter sleeves and sheer neckline.

“The groom’s party all wore morning dress which looked very smart,” says the bride.

“We also wanted to keep the Scottish theme throughout, so we had a number of traditionally Scottish elements like the piper and our evening buffet of stovies,” says Laura.

“One of the first (and best) decisions we made was to book Piano Factor,” the bride says of the entertainment.
