As a retired couple who have been together for 20 years, we decided in November 2024 that it was finally time to “tie the knot”! We chose the Hythe Imperial Hotel for its charm and reputation, and from the outset, the team was helpful and accommodating. On December 5th, 2024, we booked and paid a sizable deposit for a small wedding event planned for February 17th, 2025, including a ceremony, a wedding breakfast, and two nights’ accommodation for 10 guests (5 rooms in total). Unfortunately, just weeks after booking, my partner became severely ill, requiring critical medical care. On January 6th, 2025, we notified the hotel to reluctantly cancel, explaining the situation and providing over six weeks’ notice. On January 10th, we were informed that the full balance was still due under the terms and conditions. While we understood the policy, we had hoped the hotel might offer some compromise, given the unavoidable circumstances. Instead, they maintained their position and proposed only a small settlement discount of £245 (8.4%) if the balance was paid immediately. This experience left us with mixed feelings. While the initial planning was smooth and the staff were helpful, the lack of compromise during a challenging time was disappointing. We hope this review encourages more empathetic consideration for exceptional circumstances in the future.
