After meeting in their “dingy” local nightclub, love quickly bloomed between Sophie Waters and Alex Balding.
The Peterborough pair, both 29, were together for four years before Alex popped the question on what would otherwise have been a normal Tuesday evening at home.
“It was the most romantic thing he has ever done,” Sophie says of the candlelight proposal.
The couple planned to host their romantic farm wedding the next year and quickly got to work planning the elegant day that would be full of personal touches.
The couple first said their vows at Thorpe Hall, a grand manor house dating back to the 17th century, on September 19, 2015 in front of 85 guests.
“The wedding day was perfect, the weather was fantastic for September,” Sophie says.
The reception followed at Grange Farm, Wansford, where giant balloon centrepieces, light-up letters spelling “S & A” and, of course, plenty of flowers, gave the room the botanical romance the bride was after.
A mariachi band was a unique choice for the evening’s musical entertainment.
“My mum is from South America so it was a fun nod to music played throughout my childhood,” Sophie says.
“We wouldn’t change a thing, it was perfect.”

For her bridesmaids’ dresses, Sophie chose flattering navy gowns with lace cap sleeves.
Professional body piercer Alex opted for a textured three-piece grey suit paired with a burgundy tie.
“I love everything about Sophie, she is funny, beautiful, intelligent, kind and giving as well as my best friend,” Alex says of his bride.
Flowers were a dominant theme of the big day, and even featured on the couple’s three-tier naked cake.
